Where: West Hollywood Auditorium at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA, 90069
When: December 7th, 2008 1:30 doors open, starts at 2:00-4:00
Why: let the community speaks its mind on what happened in the recent election and to map a new direction for the Same-Sex Marriage Movement.
Contact:Marriage Equality
Marriage Equality USA (MEUSA)’s Los Angeles chapter will be facilitating the first in a series of Community Town Hall’s on December 7, 2008 from 2:00pm-4:00pm to be held at the West Hollywood Auditorium at 647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA, 90069. Doors will open at 1:30pm. The Town Hall is an open public forum to discuss Proposition 8’s aftermath and to strategize where the community should go from here.
Co-organizer and Chapter Leader Geoff Scowcroft states the purpose, “is to let the community speaks its mind on what happened in the recent election and to map a new direction for the Same-Sex Marriage Movement.” While other Town Halls have been organized Scowcroft says, “The messages in these discussions have been controlled by the same organizations that planned the failed strategy for the campaign. The format has lacked the transparency that many in the community feel is essential for a clear understanding of the issues. It is time for an open forum for our community to discuss what has happened, so that we can truly start the process of healing.”
The format for the Town Hall will allow participants to share their feelings and comments whether positive or negative for the first hour. Community Leader’s will be on hand to answer questions and help provide insight that the public might not have. The second half of the meeting will be a discussion of what direction the movement should take in the future.
It is requested that speakers limit their statements or questions to two minutes to allow multiple participants to share their point-of-view. A varied group of community leaders will be on hand to try to provide insight for and perspective.
A community area will be set up to allow other organizations to provide information and additional resources. Organizations that are interested in participating should contact the sponsors at ca-losangeles@marriageequality.org.
We are in need of volunteers that can help facilitate the event. Set up will start at 11am on the 7th. Volunteers are needed for set up, tear down and providing community information during the event. Volunteers should contact MEUSA’s local Chapter Leaders, Geoff Scowcroft and Peter Wolf at ca-losangeles@marriageequality.org. We are also looking for individuals that would be interested in filming the event.
MEUSA is also looking for the donation of a video projector and 100-150 chairs to provide additional seating for the event.
Further information about this Town Hall can be found at LA Town Hall. Information on Town Hall’s around the state and the nation can be found at the organizations website at Marriage Equality

Candelight Vigil in Cincinnati on Dec. 4
Who: Anyone and everyone.
Where: The Gathering Church (1431 Main Street)
When: December 4th, 2008 07:00PM
Why: Pmourn the five year anniversary of the passage of Ohio’s “Defense” of Marriage Act
Contact: IMPACT Cincinnati
Cincinnati, Ohio — IMPACT Cincinnati, the activist network that organized the equal marriage protest at City Hall on November 15th, will be holding a candlelight vigil on Thursday December 4 at The Gathering Church (1431 Main Street, Cincinnati, www.thegathering-church.org) at 7:00 p.m. The event will be dedicated to those who are still denied equality under current Ohio statute, and those who have been negatively impacted by discriminatory laws.
The event is set to kick off three months of activism and awareness building, marking the passage of Ohio’s Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) between December 2003 and February 2004. The act, sponsored by Cincinnati state representative Bill Seitz, was passed in the state House of Representatives by a margin of 73-24 and would later be signed into law by then-Governor Bob Taft. The state statute was later reinforced by a state constitutional amendment, approved by voters in 2006. IMPACT Cincinnati believes that public perception has changed dramatically since 2003 regarding LGBTQ persons and that there is a growing consensus amongst Ohioans to grant equal protection for same-sex couples in the state, and that continued visibility, dialogue and education is the only way to continue that trend.
The vigil on December 4 will be the debut the local WhiteKnot campaign. Gaining national prominence immediately following the JoinTheImpact.com protests on November 15, WhiteKnot.org has spearheaded a movement for people to wear a white ribbon tied in a knot as a show of support for equal marriage. From their website, “The White Knot is the symbol for marriage equality. It takes two traditional symbols of marriage — white and tying the knot — and combines them in a simple way to show support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry.”
Local organizers for IMPACT Cincinnati are optimistic about future events after the tremendous success of their City Hall protest. Aside from the vigil, plans are in the works to preview the movie MILK, set to be released in Cincinnati on December 12th, travel to Washington DC to be visible Midwest activists at the Obama inauguration, participate in several local and regional LGBTQ conferences, and take a regional leadership role in a national protest planned for June of 2009.
IMPACT Cincinnati believes that true LGBTQ equality will only be achieved when every interested person has the opportunity to engage and participate in their wider movement and community. IMPACT Cincinnati, a grassroots network of community activists, strives to energize LGBTQ and allied people in Greater Cincinnati, link dedicated volunteers to a wide range of opportunities to generate change, and supports the efforts of local organizations working for equality. All are welcome.
Students for Equality Walkout on Dec. 3

When: December 3rd, 2008 09:00AM - 09:00PM
Why: Protest the Passage of Proposition 8.

Let’s stir it up a bit by having all the students walk out of class for a NATIONWIDE protest for equality similar to the ones on 11/15/2008!
This year we saw extremely high turnouts at the polls by young voters. You guys are politically involved, you want to be heard, and you can definitely make a difference in the world!
Regardless of whether you are straight or gay. Regardless of whether you are black, white, latino, asian, or any other race/nationality. Regardless of your religion or your political status. We ask you to stand up and DEMAND equal rights for all American citizens. On Wednesday, December 3rd we strongly suggest that all students throughout the United States walk out of class at 9 am in your own time zone. This will create a ripple effect across the country! When you leave, please leave a note on your desk or chair that says, “SCHOOL TAUGHT ME NOT TO DISCRIMINATE. SAY NO TO H8. SAY YES TO EQUALITY”.
We’ll leave it up to the students at each school to figure out what they want to do while they are out of class, but we encourage you all to meet up as a group somewhere nearby and protest for equal rights for everyone. Coordinate through facebook, myspace, text messages, and word of mouth.
Since we don’t know the location and geographics of every school, we are asking students to spread the word around their campus and collectively make a plan for meeting at a specific place near by to protest as a group.
Even if you aren’t a student, there are still other ways that you can help out. Please visit studentsforequality.com for more information!

TAKE IT TO SACRAMENTO ON NOVEMBER 22ND!
With the unfortunate outcome of the recent passage of Proposition 8, the GLBT community has united in a presence that we have not seen since the early 1980’s and the onset of the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
It is with great respect that California Outreach, in partnership with Equality Action Now, humbly asks you to join GLBT individuals and organizations, PFLAG and our straight brothers and sisters at a peaceful outreach on the steps of the California State Capitol Building at 2:00pm on November 22nd.
Please join us as we reach out to all the citizens of California to demonstrate that we will not tolerate discrimination to be written into our State Constitution.
Who: Anyone and everyone.
Where: California State Capitol Building, Sacramento, CA
When: 11/22/08 2:00PM
Why: Equal Rights are inalienable and CANNOT be taken away.
In 1987 the largest rally for gay rights in Sacramento took place, counting 15,000 strong. We need to stand together and make a statement that we will not stand idly by and let the rights of our sons, daughters, parents, and friends be taken away. Twenty one years later — Are YOU ready to make history?
The success of this event depends upon getting the word out. Invite your friends!
Gather at 10th Street & Capitol Mall in Sacramento.
For Speakers and More Information Visit California Outreach.
