1 Million Plus For Equality!

Prop 8 The Musical

Posted by amy On December - 3 - 2008

In a country founded on the separation of church and state, the fact that we are denied equal protections under the law based on a religious belief, is nothing short of hypocrisy. And with anything hypocritical, someone always sees a way to shed a little humor on the situation that keeps the conversation going at full force. Thank you Marc Shaiman and all of the amazing talent that went into this video.

  11. Dave Said,

Speaking strictly as a graduate of Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, the city that started it all, I’m disappointed to see people lauding approval upon what is essentially bigotry, not only towards the obvious, but also towards Jews and gays who do exist within many various church organizations and denominations. As long as the movement continues to use barbarian tactics without promoting mutual understanding, we will only succeed in creating animosity and alienating people. A movement which claims love is it’s core then attacks with vehement hate is nothing short of hypocrisy itself.

  12. Larry Fanning Said,

Very funny, except for one thing–why the “Sacramento Community College” at the start? That seems like an insult to me, a proud graduate of Sacramento City College. Then, as now, the teachers and staff at the community colleges in Sacramento (including American River, Folsom, Cosumnes) have been very supportive of GLBT issues. (I note that ARC is having a screening of the documentary “Pursuit of Equality” next week–with its director leading a discussion.) It’s true that some cc students have been vocally anti-Prop 8, but that’s true of people the general population, too.

What is truly sad and illustrative is that despite brilliant vignettes like this getting in the faces of the California populace, they passed Prop 8 anyway. Those same pinheads will no doubt dismiss the Ban Heterosexual Divorce piece and related activity as well. This only proves that ultimately, you cannot defeat unthinking hate with reason. It is like shooting an arrow at a flame. Only with resistance, political savvy and unrelenting action can we prevail. Lots of love and support from my husband and I in Canada.

  23. anna Said,

I just saw “Prop 8 The Musical” on MSNBC- which brought me to this website.
I am not a lesbian. I am in a committed relationship with a wonderful man who is honest and sensitive. My man is my best friend. My man is the person I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want to marry him and raise our children in a loving and nurturing home. When we get married I am going to have his state health insurance and all the benefits of marriage. Why can’t we all have this? Why can’t two men have this? Why can’t two women have this?
My frustration about Proposition 8 is eating away at my soul!!! It doesn’t affect me in a social context or economically. It just AFFECTS me. I can’t imagine denying someone their right to happiness. Has everyone forgotten the Golden Rule? Treat others as you want to be treated. My teacher, Mrs. Cannon, taught me that in the first grade!
I pledge, as a teacher and a human being, to love all I come in contact with. I will teach my children love is beautiful no matter what gender or color.
    All my support,
    Anna b

  29. Katherine Said,

I am a Christian and I found the video very offensive to me personaly. I voted no on prop eight because i felt strongly of seperation of church and state but this video makes me almost want to vote yes if the issue comes up again. I dont like them mocking my religion and Ive had enough. Nobody follows the old testement anymore. I don`t know why hollywood keeps having to mock my religion. The thought that Christians would be motivated by money to change thier moral beliefs is offensive. I am outraged.

  30. Katherine Said,

I just feel that if the gay community wants me to come there way then they cant first attack my religion. That is not the way to change peoples minds. Why dont you take Jesus out of the muscial and stop making fun of the prop eight people and give some arguments instead for your possition. I would be more inclined to listen to that.

I love love love this musical - beautifully done and a great way to educate those who are not aware what the mormons did to push their agenda. I hope this will help to strengthen understanding in the foundation of our country’s constitution - that religion cannot be the basis for any law and that ALL PEOPLE are equal.

It cost Obama $5 million to run his 30-minute spot before the election. This GREAT video runs a mere 3+ minutes. What might that cost to have it run on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and, yes, FOX!??! I’d gladdly offer up a large contribution.

  33. Terry in North Augusta, SC Said,

An inspiring reminder that too many of us focus on small insignifficant differences between people and completely bypass the big picture of what our world is meant to be. A world where differences are celebrated with brilliant bold colors that when brought together and witnessed from afar, form a picture of a world that anyone would be proud to call home.

  35. Karen Said,

I absolutely loved this musical and thought that it was hilarious and extremely right in all the hypocrisy displayed. However, I really think its meant more for people like me and most of the people who wrote on this thread who already overwhelmingly support overturning Prop 8 and support equal rights for all. This was amazing and I will show it to all my friends who I know feel the same way as I do that it is absolutely wrong the lack of rights for the gay community in this country. The problem really is that this would absolutely not change a conservative or religious right person’s mind about the issues- it is slightly making fun of them (although the other side is portrayed silly as well, some people are extra- sensitive) and right away Jack Black appearing on the screen as Jesus would make almost any conservative Christian turn the video clip off right away! Although I obviously have differing values and thoughts than Katherine who wrote above, I do feel she’s right and that if we really want to change people’s minds, the people who are voting for Prop 8, then it can’t be through this (although we can watch it over and over again and laugh which I certainly will), it has to be through well-founded arguments. That being said, I am horrified that once again the US is strongly resisting change for the good of humanity- I love Obama, I do, but that he can’t even say himself that he supports gay marriage really makes me wonder about the limited options we have in this country. HUMAN RIGHTS FOR EVERYONE!

  37. Jenny Said,

I heard about this video and wanted to watch it to form my own opinion. While I do not support government getting involved in private affairs such as marriage, I found this video extremely offensive. It portrays Christians as small-minded and Jesus mocking the Bible, a book upon which over 2 billion people base their religion. I’m with Katherine; if you want me to listen to your arguments, make them constructive, not destructive.

Posted on December 8th, 2008 at 9:45 am

  38. Lora Said,

to Katherne: If you want us to “stop attacking your religion”, then don’t keep using your religion to attack our civil rights. This is not a religious issue, so don’t keep making it one. Not everyone believes in your religion nor should they be forced to live their lives following your religions “rules”. It seems to me that if the religious people want Jesus and religion taken out of this video/musical, then they should taken Jesus/ religion out of controling other peoples lives. Gay marriage doesn’t infringe on your religious rights, your marriage, or how you want to raise your children…but pushing your religious beliefs does infringe upon my (and MANY others) life, my marriage and my constituional right of marrying the person of my choice. (Not a child or animal, but the single, consenting adult that also choses to marry me.)

  39. Jennifer Said,

We can only hope that Prop 8 gets overturned.. Everyone deserves to have the Love that they want. I applaude Hollywood for lending thier support to this issue!! We want our children to grow up knowing they can Love everyone for who they are… not how or who they Love!!

  40. Karen P Said,

Kathryn, Can you not see WITH Jesus in this play that it only underscores the hypocrisy of the religious right? He was the one who brought the sinners into his flock. He was the one who befriended the weak, the downtrodden. I lived my whole childhood going to fundamentalist churches. I figured out at a young age that most attendees don’t treat their neighbor like they would want to be treated. Gay is not something that was just invented, it has been with humans throughout history. Treat the gay population as you, yourself, would want to be treated. THAT’S what Jesus would do. Why would you deny yourself all the human rights that you now deny the gay population?
I am a straight woman. I went and marched with everyone on protest day. It is not right to deny basic, human rights to this section of our nation.

not to sound mean, but there will always be people who are less evolved, less enlightened, less progressive. it is a disgrace to mankind that LGBTs have to live around these neanderthals who believe in crazy mythology and superstition, making other people’s lives miserable. you’ll never get rid of ignorance, so just ignore their existence as much as you can and try to overpower them, eventually humans will evolve and their numbers will dwindle

  43. Katherine Said,

In response…first off I dont force anyone to do anything. I did vote no on prop eight as I have stated before. My best friend is a gay man. And I was ok with homosexuality…then i thought to myself…I must choose now…Gods word or worldly beliefs. As a Christian friend advised me…it would be best to choose Gods way every time. I am still not going to take anyones rights away…however, if someone wants to come to me with a longing for God then i will lead them to a relationship with him through Gods word. The bible says you can`t serve two masters which means I can not serve the world so to speak and God. I must choose.

Posted on December 9th, 2008 at 6:26 pm

  44. Katherine Said,

Its basicaly like a house of cards…if you take one thing out of the bible and change or undermind it…then you start doing that with other things in the bible till you have nothing left. Once I say that homosexuality is ok…then that opens the door up to accepting fornication then after that who knows what else I will acept as being ok. As I said before it is like a house of cards. Look honestly I dont know why homosexuality is considered a sin…honestly i dont. All i know is that it is and I acpet the bible as it is writen.

  45. Katherine Said,

Im just going to be realy honest with everyone here…I am not realy strong in my faith right now after seing the movie religulous. All i know is that i am looking for some feedback from people on this site to learn from. I have known from a very early age…that I believe in God. I also know that I would like to follow him and I know the bible is a guide that tells and shows us how to do that. Right now i am in limbo…I am trying to follow God and become more established in him but on the other hand…I am struggling with some of his word. Like i said i dont know why homosexuality is even in the bible…but if i am to follow God…then I must choose either the ways of him or the ways of the world.

  46. Mike in St. Louis Said,

Katherine, you need to spend some time reading the most recent cover in Newsweek. You state that “people don’t follow the old testament anymore.” Refer to the clip where the actors are talking about picking and choosing for my response to that. Many of the passages in the bible don’t apply to the world we live in anymore. That is everything that is wrong with the Christian right. They feel as though they can pick and choose the messages that are written in the bible. Mind you, text that has been handed down hundreds if not thousands of times, translated over and over again, each time with the personal bias of the translator put into the translation. A document that has writing attributed to one person that scholars have shown to have been written hundreds of years apart, documents that weren’t deemed important enough at the time to be left in excluded, including many gospels. This isn’t about “religon.” This is about human dignity and if you can’t take a little humerous shot to your faith, then that tells me that maybe you aren’t as secure in your beliefs as you think. I thought that the clip was fantastic, and I’m a practicing Catholic with a wife and three children. They will grow up to learn that what the Pope, Bishops and clergy preach from the pulpit is every bit as biased and self serving as that damned liberal media and they can live a good life and help people and not necessarily believe in a god. Show me a god that turns his back on the working poor and homeless because he feels like we should protect the unborn and tells me I’m a sinner because I think it is more important to help those walking the earth and I’ll show you a false god. So, I’ll err on the side of social justice and compassion and take my chances when I meet my maker (if there is even a maker). My advice, live a good life, help people, speak up for those that can’t speak for themselves, donate to charity (money or time), help change the injustice in the world. I guarantee you, in the end, you’ll get more satisfaction than following an ancient, soon to be obsolete, incomplete set of manuscripts. So, to the people on this site, you have the support of one midwest teacher and all of his liberal friends!

  47. Katherine Said,

Well I sometimes think about how the bible says that we were created man and woman. Then I think of programs like I saw about the pregnant man. For most people our sexual identity is mostly whats on the outside but for this person it was mostly on the inside (his brain.) I know the bible is ancient and I know it does not take into considerations things like the transgendered because they didn`t have those opporations back in the day. One thing is I know there is a God. Its just a gut instinct. Many would call this irrational because I don`t have any proof but they say what is ingrained in you as a child sticks with you when you get older. All i am trying to say is where do we draw the line between what is moral and what isn`t moral. If you don`t have the bible…then how do you determine moral? I thought Mike you made a good point about how we turn our backs on the people who are here to help the unborn. That is true we do that. Anyways I already did amit that I wasn`t 100% strong in my faith. Its just lately I have been putting pressure on myself to become more fundemental in accordance with the bible because I want to be closer to God.

  48. Katherine Said,

Mike, when the bible was writen were the books actualy writen by the authors they are titled by…ie: Mark actualy writen by mark, John actualy writen by John? No offense but how is it that your a catholic but you dont believe necessarily in God or the Bible or even the catholic bible? How does that work exaclty? No offense just wondering.
