This weekend, I saw MILK. If there is nothing else you do next weekend, please please please go see MILK. We all deserve to know our history. Too many people do not even know what the Stonewall Riots were, or WHY they occurred. Few know about those who fought for the rights that we now have. We need to educate the country about our struggle, and that begins with educating ourselves and our allies. Keep this conversation of equality going. Take a friend to see MILK. Take your grandparents, your parents, your new neighbor, you name it. The gay rights movement has been a long fought one with many wins in the face of many tragedies. The murder of Harvey Milk was a tragedy and one that will not be in vain.
Harvey Milk set a precedence for our community to rise as one and FIGHT for full equality. He taught our movement that VISIBILITY is the key. We MUST come out, we must join together, and we must fight for our rights as one loud voice! We cannot allow those who don’t understand us, to sell fear and silence us. Our Nationwide protest on November 15th showed members of our community who felt scared and alone, that we are there for them. We are not alone. They are not alone. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Whether in a large city or a small rural community - the LGBTQ community exists everywhere. We are your brothers, your sisters, your friends, your cousins, your co-workers, and your neighbors. We are young, we are old. We are black, we are white… we are EVERY COLOR of the rainbow. See MILK and RISE! Those who came before us have loaded the bases. It is now our time to hit a home run!

Can someone please explain why the release of this film was delayed to late November / early December, when OBVIOUSLY its subject matter and themes would have seriously benefited the anti-Prop 8 initiative prior to the election?

I will be going to see this movie. ****I will not go to see at a Cinemark theatre, apparently, they were in support of passing Prop 8.

DO NOT see this movie at a Century or Cinemark theater. The CEO of Cinemark/Century donated $9999 in support of Prop 8. We do not want to give them any of our dollars. See this movie - but see it in a non Century or non Cinemark theater. Our group is driving a lot further to see it at a Regal Cinema this Friday.

Grunter. It’s called Focus wanting an OSCAR and $$$. If the movie was seen as “political” (which it obviously is) it would have hurt their chances. Freakin’ embarrassing.

Looking to see if my theater is Cinemark/Century. Mine is Regal Entertainment. Is that its own thing, or does it belong to the others? Are Cinemark Century the only prop 8 supporters?

I am definitely seeing the movie. But i too think its important to view it at any theater except Century or Cinemark. How dare they expect us to ” support” their movie with our money, its like were withdrawing the fight or something!

A great GREAT movie. Grunter, to your question, Gus Van Sant (the director) spoke to just that question in the December issue of Details. To quote him: “We’re going to screen it before the election to have a part in that [prop 8]. But because it’s a political film, if it had opened before the election, the end of its life could have been November 4. It could have become a film you were supposed to see ‘during’ the election, and after it was over, it’s “Oh, that’s the ‘election’ film, right?” There you have it. And Van Sant is an openly gay filmmaker–if that were to matter. And I’ve got to disagree with you, jgroove. I’ve had my eye on FOCUS (the picture house that brought you Brokeback and Motorcycle Diaries and Lost in Translation) and I can’t see their political slant. They’re a small, indie, quality-driven studio that makes passionate projects from passionate filmmakers. I haven’t heard too many people complain about creative controls. I could be wrong though. We’ll never know.

When you see MILK be sure not to watch it at a Cinemark theatre. The CEO of that company donated money to promote the passage of Proposition 8.
Now, like every other hypocritical exploitative entity that secretly loathes gay people but loves our money, he wants to profit from you and me, the gay community, whom he finds to be so immoral unfit and inferior that our marriages would obliterate the sanctity of holy matrimony itself. Harvey would not have tolerated this and neither should we. Don’t let your hard earned money be used to fund hateful measures prevent us from attaining the full range of civil rights enjoyed by every other American…except you and me.
BOYCOTT CINEMARK.
